What Do I Need to Get Started?
Starting your paddling journey can feel overwhelming—but it doesn't have to be. Whether you're gearing up for your first day on flatwater or preparing for whitewater adventures, there are a few essential pieces of equipment every paddler should have. This guide will help you understand what you need, why it matters, and where to find it.
1. Boat
You won’t get far without a boat! Whether you're canoeing, creeking, river running, or playboating, choosing the right vessel is essential. Your boat should fit your body size, experience level, and the type of water you plan to paddle most often—be it calm lakes, winding rivers, or steep creeks.
Not sure where to start? Check out Paddling.com or Canoeing.com for reviews, comparisons, and helpful guides to find the boat that’s right for you.
2. Paddle
Once you’ve found your boat, the next step is choosing the right paddle. Just like boats, paddles are designed for specific paddling styles—whether you're navigating whitewater, touring flatwater, or canoe tripping.
Key factors include blade shape, shaft material, and length, all of which can affect your efficiency, control, and comfort on the water. A well-matched paddle can make a big difference in your performance and endurance.

3. Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
A Personal Flotation Device (PFD) is essential for every paddler—whether you're kayaking, canoeing, or stand-up paddleboarding. If you capsize or fall into the water, your PFD keeps you afloat and greatly increases your chances of a safe recovery.
Not all PFDs are created equal. Some are designed specifically for whitewater, others for flatwater or touring. Fit, comfort, mobility, and pocket layout all matter—especially on longer paddling days.

4. Spray Skirt
A spray skirt helps keep water out of your kayak and you in it—especially in whitewater or sea kayaking conditions. While they’re essential for rough water, even recreational paddlers can benefit from a spray skirt to stay dry and comfortable in splashy conditions or bad weather.
Choosing the right skirt depends on two key things: the size of your cockpit and your paddling style. Materials, fit, and tunnel design can vary widely between touring and whitewater skirts.
5. Helmet
A helmet is one of the most important pieces of safety gear for whitewater paddling and creeking. It protects your head from rocks, your boat, and other hazards if you capsize or take a spill in moving water.
A proper paddling helmet should fit snugly, offer full coverage (especially at the back of the head), and stay securely in place. Look for models specifically designed for whitewater use—bike and climbing helmets won’t provide the same protection in turbulent conditions.
If you're planning to paddle anything above flatwater, don’t leave shore without one.
“Is that it?!” Not quite.
Depending on the type of paddling you plan to do—whether it's whitewater, touring, or extended trips—you may find yourself adding more gear over time. Here are some common items paddlers eventually include in their kits
Paddle Shoes
Gloves/Pogies
Knife
Tow-Rope
Sponge
Nose Clips
Float Bags
Bilge pump
Dry (or semi-dry) suit
Wet suit
Throw Bag
Whistle
